Vietnamese Explanation

Nếu mức chắc chắn thấp hơn, ta dùng ‘possibly’ hay ‘might be’. Nếu thực chắc chắn, ta dùng ‘definitely’, ‘certainly’, hay ‘absolutely’. Thứ Hai Mary mới về, nên thứ Ba chắc cô sẽ làm việc được, và cô nói: I can definitely start on Tuesday.=Chắc chắn là thứ Ba tôi có thể bắt đầu làm việc. Nhưng sáng thứ Hai Mary mới về mà Tom muốn cô làm ngay sáng hôm đó, nên cô nói: I’ll probably be exhausted.=chắc có lẽ tôi sẽ mệt lả. Nhưng khi Tom nói thế chiều thứ Hai cô vào làm được không thì Mary trả lời: I might be able to do that.=Có lẽ tôi vào làm chiều thứ Hai được. Tóm lại, để chỉ sự chắc chắn, ta dùng absolutely, certainly, surely. Muốn nói chắc có lẽ, ta dùng probably; và để chỉ sự có thể, ta dùng possibly, hay might be able to. To find a satisfactory solution.=tìm giải pháp thỏa đáng. Solution là danh từ của to solve. To solve a problem.=giải quyết một vấn đề. Solution=giải pháp.

Vietnamese Explanation

A compromise=một sự nhân nhượng. A win-win situation=hoàn cảnh hai bên cùng nhượng bộ và thoả thuận, giải  pháp  cả  hai bên đều thoả huận . [Bắt buộc phải có dấu nối hyphen giữa hai chữ ‘win’ trong ‘a win-win situation’.] ‘Win-win’ is a term in conflict management.= ‘Win-win’ là từ ngữ  dùng trong khoa giải quyết mâu thuẫn, conflict management, tả tình trạng cả hai bên đều nhượng một chút và cả  hai đều thoả thuận. Flexible=mềm dẻo, linh động, chịu nhượng bộ. Sau đây là một câu từ chối lịch sự: I understand your problem, but it’s impossible for me to come on Monday.=tôi hiểu vấn đề khó khăn của Ông, nhưng tôi không thể vào làm hôm thứ Hai được.

Larry: Gary’s Tips.

Gary discusses the language you can use to show certainty or uncertainty.

a compromise = một sự nhân nhượng.
a win-win situation = một hoàn cảnh cả hai bên đều chấp  nhận.

There is a big difference between something you are sure of, and something that is uncertain.

Eliz: Now it’s time for Gary’s Tips with Gary Engleton!

Gary: Hello, Elizabeth! In business discussions, there is a big difference between something you are sure of, and something that is uncertain.

In today’s Business Dialogs, we can see examples of the language you can use to show certainty or uncertainty.

In both dialogs, Tom is negotiating with Mary to try to get her to work on Monday.

In the first dialog, Mary is very certain that she cannot work on Monday.

She uses the expression, “It’s not possible” to state her position very clearly.

Tom: Mary, I really need you back on Monday.

Mary: Tom, I understand your problem, but it’s not possible for me to work on Monday.

Gary: She won’t work on Monday, but she promises that she definitely will start on Tuesday.

Mary: My flight arrives at six o’clock on Monday morning.

I’ll be too tired to work.

I can definitely start on Tuesday.

Gary: In the second version of the conversation, Mary is more flexible.

Notice how she uses the words “may” and “probably” to make her position less certain.

Tom: Mary, I really need you back on Monday.

Mary: Well…  That may be difficult.

My plane arrives at six o’clock Monday morning.

I’ll probably be exhausted.

Gary: Tom proposes a compromise by asking Mary to work only in the afternoon.

Tom: How about if you only work in the afternoon?

Would you agree to that?

Mary: I might be able to do that.

But I’d like some time off later in the week.

Tom: Sure, I can arrange that.

Gary: These conversations represent a kind of negotiation.

In the second conversation, Mary and Tom worked together to find a satisfactory solution.

This is an example of a win-win situation.

Thanks for joining us today for Gary’s Tips.  We’ll see you again next time!

Eliz: Thanks, Gary!

Vietnamese Explanation
Dùng động từ ‘take time off,’  quí vị hãy hỏi Ông chủ sở xin nghỉ ba ngày bắt đầu từ thứ Hai tuần tới. Quí vị nói sao? I’d like to take three days off  beginning Monday next week. Thí dụ: Một người bạn mời bạn đến ăn tiệc nướng thịt ngoài sân. We’re planning a cookout  this Sunday afternoon. We invite you to come over. Bạn nói: I appreciate your invitation, but it’s impossible for me to come this Sunday afternoon. We have a round of golf until 6:00 p.m. I’m afraid we can’t come. We really need you to come to work this Saturday. Bạn nói: I’m sorry, but it’s impossible since I promised my children to bring them to the zoo in the morning. How about the afternoon? Nếu bạn có thể vào làm và muốn nghỉ bù tuần sau, thì bạn nói sao?– That might be possible, but I need to take some time off the following week. Okay, I’ll come in at 1:00 o’clock in the afternoon. Chắc quí vị còn nhớ tiếng gì chỉ  môt sự thoả thuận mà cả hai bên đều chấp nhận?—What’s the term for an agreement acceptable to both sides?  Ðó là chữ  a win-win situation (solution).
