Anh Ngữ Sinh Động Bài 202

Anh Ngữ sinh động bài 202

31/12/2008

Ðây là Chương Trình Anh Ngữ Sinh Ðộng New Dynamic English bài 202. Phạm Văn xin kính chào quí vị thính giả. Mở đầu bài học, ta nghe lại một đoạn của bài trước. Trong đoạn Personal Information, tin tức cá nhân, ta nghe Larry giúp trả lời câu hỏi: Is it appropriate in business to talk about personal issues? Trong công việc thương mại, nói về những vấn đề cá nhân có thích hợp không? Appropriate=thích hợp, thích đáng, trái nghĩa là inappropriate. Ôn lại: an issue=vấn đề cần thảo luận. Tương tự, thay vì “issue” ta có thể dùng “question” hay “problem.” Approach (n)=way=cách, lối giải quyết. One approach is to let the other person make the first move.=You should let the other speak about personal issues first.=một cách là để người đối thoại nói về những chuyện có tính cách riêng tư trước. Let=để. Sau “let”, động từ theo sau không có “to”. Let him talk first=hãy để anh ta nói trước. Her father did not let her go to the dance by herself=cha cô ta không cho cô đi khiêu vũ một mình. Please let the window down=xin đóng cửa sổ. Let là động từ bất quy tắc: to let/let/let.

Make the first move=hành động trước. Stereotype=một ý tưởng rập khuôn sẵn, có khi sai, ta nên tránh dùng. This is an example of a stereotype: All Americans like to talk about their personal lives. [Some do; some don’t; it depends on the person.] To depend=tùy thuộc. That depends on the situation=cái đó còn tùy hoàn cảnh. When can we begin to talk about personal issues? Khi nào ta có thể nói chuyện riêng tư? Beginning with small talk about the weather or your trip is better at first.=Lúc đầu hỏi thăm qua loa về thời tiết hay cuộc hành trình thì tốt hơn. Later on, after you begin to develop a good relationship with someone, you can talk about personal issues.=Sau đó, sau khi bạn đã gây được cảm tình với người đó, thì bạn có thể nói về chuyện có tính cách cá nhân. It’s important to watch the other person’s reaction.= điều quan trọng là phải để ý đến phản ứng của người kia. Reaction=phản ứng. When you first meet someone in a business situation, you probably shouldn’t talk too much about your family or your personal life, unless you are asked.=Khi bạn gặp ai lần đầu trong một hoàn cảnh thương mại, có lẽ bạn không nên nói quá nhiều về gia đình mình hay đời tư của mình, trừ phi bạn được người ta hỏi.

    Culture Tips:    Personal Information

    Larry:    Culture Tips

This Culture Tip answers the question: “When is it appropriate in business to talk about personal issues?”

•    a stereotype     ý tưởng rập khuôn sẵn

It depends a lot on the situation.     Tùy nhiều vào hoàn cảnh.

We have to be careful to avoid stereotypes. Chúng ta phải cẩn thận tránh ý rập khuôn sẵn.

One approach is to let the other person make the first move.     Có một cách là để người kia nói trước.

Eliz:    Welcome once again to “Culture Tips” with Gary Engleton.

Today’s e-mail question is, “When is it appropriate in business to talk about personal issues?”

Gary:    Well, it depends a lot on the situation.

When you first meet someone in a business situation, you probably shouldn’t talk too much about your family or your personal life, unless you are asked.

Small talk about the weather or your trip is better at first.

But then you should get down to business fairly quickly.

Eliz:    When can you begin to talk about personal issues?

Gary:    Later on, after you begin to develop a good business relationship with someone.

Eliz:    You know, some people think that all Americans like to talk about their personal lives.

Gary:    Yes, people do think that.

But it really depends on the person.

Some Americans don’t like discussing their personal lives in a business situation.

Eliz:    So we have to be careful to avoid stereotypes.

Gary:    Yes, we do. One approach is to let the other person make the first move.

Eliz:    So you should let the other person begin talking about personal issues first?

Gary:    Yes. And then if you want, you can talk about your personal life also.

It’s important to watch the other person’s reaction.

Eliz:    Thank you, Gary.

    Let’s take a short break.

Vietnamese Explanation

Bây giờ ta hãy trả lời phần True or False, Ðúng hay Sai. Unless=trừ phi. Unless you are asked.=trừ phi có người hỏi bạn. Thí dụ về personal questions, nên tránh hỏi: How much do you earn? How much is your salary? Lương bạn bao nhiêu? Talking about the weather and your trip is appropriate.=nói về thời tiết hay cuộc hành trình thì thích hợp. Quí vị còn nhớ tiếng gì chỉ hỏi thăm qua loa khi mới gặp?=> Small talk. Some Americans don’t like to talk about their personal lives.=có một số người Mỹ không muốn nói về chuyện đời tư của họ. It’s always appropriate to begin a conversation with small talk=Khi bắt đầu câu chuyện, ta hỏi thăm qua loa thì lúc nào cũng thích hợp. Ta hãy nghe phần True or False.

Vietnamese Explanation

Trong phần tới, ta nghe Larry chỉ những nhóm chữ thường dùng khi ta đổi đề tài câu chuyện, phrases to use when you want to change the subject of a conversation. Ðó là : By the way..nhân tiện đây…So…vậy thì…You know… như bạn biết…If you know to change the subject, and if you understand when the other person wants to change the subject, you can help avoid uncomfortable situations.=nếu bạn biết cách đổi đề tài câu chuyện, và hiểu khi nào người kia muốn đổi đề tài câu chuyện thì bạn sẽ giúp tránh những hoàn cảnh ngượng ngùng, khó chịu, bất tiện. You know, I heard that Mary is leaving…Anh biết, tôi nghe nói Mary sắp thôi không làm ở đây nữa…Bây giờ, để ôn lại những chữ đã học, quí vị thử nói bằng tiếng Anh những câu sau đây. Xin lỗi, tôi phải gọi điện thoại cho nhà tôi để xem nhà tôi có muốn tôi trên đường về nhà, mua gì về ăn tối không.=> Sorry, I should phone my wife to see if she wants me to get something for dinner on my way home.

Dùng nhóm chữ To break the ice (phá bầu không khí nghiêm trọng, làm cho mọi người thoải mát), để mở đầu câu chuyện, và chữ small talk (hỏi chuyện qua loa), để nói câu này bằng tiếng Anh: Ðể mọi người cảm thấy thoải mái, bắt đầu buổi họp ta nên nói chuyện qua loa như về thời tiết.=>To break the ice before a business meeting, we should begin with some small talk, like the weather. Hãy dùng chữ “unless” trong câu này: Một cách tốt là tránh nói về đời tư của mình, trừ phi người ta hỏi. One good approach is to avoid talking about your personal life, unless you are asked. Bạn phải cẩn thận để tránh những ý rập khuôn sẵn.=You have to be careful to avoid stereotypes.

Gary’s Tips:    Discussing Personal Information

Larry:    Gary’s Tips.

Gary discusses how to change the subject of a conversation.

MUSIC

Eliz:    Now it’s time for Gary’s Tips with Gary Engleton!

Gary:    Hello, Elizabeth!  Today I’ll be talking about changing the subject.

“Changing the subject” means moving a conversation to a different topic or subject.

At the beginning of today’s Business Dialog, Cynthia changes the subject by using the expression, “By the way…”

Cynthia:    Hi Doug! How’re you doing?

Doug:    Not bad, Cynthia. And yourself?

Cynthia:    Pretty good.

By the way, I see that you got someone new on your team today.

    What’s his name?

Doug:    His name’s Victor.

Gary:    Cynthia begins to ask a lot of personal questions about Victor.

So Doug tries to change the subject.

He uses the word “So” to begin a new topic.

Cynthia:    How’s he doing?

Doug:    It’s hard to tell. He’s only been here four hours.

So, what’s new in your department?

Gary:    Cynthia does not want to change the subject and she continues to ask questions about Victor.

    Let’s listen.

Doug:    So, what’s new in your department?

Cynthia:    Uh, about Victor. Where’s he from?

Doug:    I’m not sure. I think he’s from Michigan.

You know, I heard that Mary is leaving…

Gary:    Again, Victor tries to change the subject, using the expression, “You know…” to introduce a new topic.

But Cynthia keeps asking personal questions.

Finally, Doug is very direct. [Doug nói thẳng]

    Let’s listen:

Doug:    Say, you sure have a lot of questions.

Cynthia:    Sorry, I just like to know who I’m working with.

Doug:    Well, you know, I haven’t really asked him too many personal questions.

I don’t know him very well yet.

Gary:    In business and in the workplace, some people like to talk about their personal lives and some people don’t.

If you know how to change the subject, and if you understand when the other person wants to change the subject, you can help avoid uncomfortable situations.

Thanks for joining us today for Gary’s Tips.

Eliz:    Thanks, Gary!
