NUMERALS (SỐ TỪ)
Số từ bao gồm 2 loại: số đếm và số thứ tự.
I. Số đếm (cardinal numbers)
Số đếm là những chữ số dùng để đếm: one, two, three, … seventy five, ninety one, a hundred, one hundred and forty six, a thousand, …
Lưu ý:
Hundred, thousand, million,… không có hình thức số nhiều khi là số đếm.
Ex: five thousand books, three hundred cars Hundreds of: hàng trăm Thousands of: hàng ngàn
** Cách dùng của số đếm trong tiếng Anh
1. Đếm số lượng
– I have seven pens. (Tôi có 7 cái bút.)
– My family has four people. (Gia đình tôi có 4 người.)
2. Số điện thoại
– My phone number is zero-nine-seven, nine-four-six, three-eight-two. (Số điện thoại của tôi là: 097.946.382.)
3. Độ tuổi
– I am nineteen years old. (Tôi 19 tuổi.)
4. Năm
– He was born in nineteen ninety-four. (Anh ấy sinh năm 1994.)
II. Số thứ tự (ordinal numbers)
Số thứ tự dùng để chỉ các thứ tự như: first, second, third, fourth, fifth, eighteenth, forty fifth, a hundredth,… thirty-ninth,…
Lưu ý:
- Cách đọc ngày tháng:
1st September, 1944: The first of September (September the first), nineteen forty four.
5th January, 1807: The fifth of January (January the fifth), eighteen hundred and seven.
• Cách đọc phân số:
- Một phân số gồm có 2 phần: phần trên là tử số, phần dưới là mẫu số.
3 => tử số (numerator)
5 – mẫu số (denominator)
- Muốn nói một phân số, ta dùng số đếm cho tử số và số thứ tự cho mẫu số.
- Nếu tử số là 1 thì mẫu số ở số ít và nếu tử số lớn hơn 1 thì mẫu số ở số nhiều (thêm s). :
1/6 : one-sixth 2/5 : two-fifths

- Khi tử số có hai chữ số trở lên hoặc khi mẫu số có ba chữ số trở lên thì ta nói như sau:+ Tử số dùng số đếm+ Mẫu số đọc từng chữ số một+ Giữa tử số và mẫu số ta dùng chữ “over”
Ex: : 13/47 thirteen over four seven
4/136 : four over one three six

- Các trường hợp ngoại lệ:
1/2 : one (a) half 1/4 : one (a) quarter hoặc one fourth
2/100 : two percent
* Cả số đếm lẫn số thứ tự đều có chức năng như một danh từ hoặc tính từ trong câu.
Ex: “Will you have another cup of tea?” “No, thanks. I’ve had two”
There were three questions in the test. The second was particularly difficult.
We had three visitors that day. The first visitor to arrive was my aunt Milly.

Sử dụng POINT để phân biệt phần sau dấu thập phân trong số thập phân (decimals).
Ví dụ: 3.2 = three point two.

- Số thập phân có nhiều hơn một chữ số sau dấu thập phân, chúng ta có thể đọc từng số một. Ví dụ: 3,456.789 = three thousand, four hundred and fifty-six point seven eight nine.
- Quy tắc trên ngoại lệ khi nói về dollars và cents (hoặc pound và pence). Ví dụ: $32.97 = thirty-two dollars, ninety-seven (cents).

- 1 + 3 = 4 (one plus three equals four)
- 4 – 1 = 3 (four minus one equals three / four take away one equals three)
- 3 * 2 = 6 (three multiplied by two equals six / three times two equals six)
- 8 / 4 = 2 (eight divided by four equals two)
1. Khi muốn nói đến ngày sinh nhật:
– Yesterday was my 17th birthday. (Hôm qua là sinh nhật lần thứ 17 của tôi.)
2. Xếp hạng:
– VietNam come first in Miss Grand 2021. (Viet Nam trở thành hoa hậu hoà bình năm 2021.)
3. Số tầng trong một tòa nhà:
– My office is on the fifth floor. (Văn phòng của tôi nằm ở tầng 5 của tòa nhà.)
