Max: I was working for a radio station.
Kathy: And before that? Before that, what did you do?

I worked for a computer company in San Jose, south of San Francisco.
That’s where I met my wife Karen.
Kathy: How did you like your work?
Max: Well, I liked some parts of it.
I enjoyed talking to customers.
And the salary was very good. [lương rất khá]
Kathy: What didn’t you like about the job?
Max: I had to make a lot of business trips.
So I was away from home quite a bit.
I missed my wife and family.
I decided to look for a different job, a job where I didn’t have to travel.
Kathy: What kind of job did you look for?
Max: Well, when I was in college, I worked at the college radio station.
I liked that job a lot, and I was pretty good at it.
So I applied for a job at a radio station in San Francisco. [to apply for a job.=làm đơn xin việc.]
And I got the job.
Kathy: Our guest is Max Wilson. We’ll talk more after our break.
This is New Dynamic English.

Cut 3
Bây giờ quí vị nghe lại và tập nói câu dài.
[Same as Cut 2]
Thí dụ về động từ theo sau bởi verb-ing. I dislike people telling me what to do.=tôi không ưa những người bảo tôi phải làm này nọ. I can’t imagine her working in a restaurant.=tôi không tưởng tượng cô ta lại làm việc ở một nhà hàng. I spent an hour listening to music.=tôi để ra 1 giờ nghe nhạc.
Everyone burst out laughing when he told a joke.=ai cũng phá lên cười khi anh ta kể chuyện khôi hài. [burst out laughing=cười rộ; burst out crying=khóc òa. She burst out crying after reading his letter. To burst/burst/burst=nổ tung.]
We want to avoid disappointing our customers.=chúng tôi tránh làm mất lòng khách hàng.
As a book critic, he spends all his time reading novels.=làm người phê bình sách, anh ta để tất cả thì giờ để đọc tiểu thuyết.
Keep on talking, I’m listening.=bạn cứ nói tiếp đi, tôi lắng nghe đây.
I suggest talking to a lawyer first.=Tôi đề nghị trước hết hãy đi hỏi luật sư đã.
She can’t stand listening to his complaint.=cô ta không chịu được lời anh ta than phiền.
Would you mind opening the window? Xin bạn vui lòng mở cửa sổ.
In the past few lessons, we practiced pronouncing the most difficult words in English.=Trong vài bài vừa qua, chúng ta đã thực tập phát âm những chữ khó nhất trong tiếng Anh.
We also tried to avoid mispronouncing these difficult words.=chúng ta cũng gắng tránh phát âm sai những chữ khó này.
Như vậy chúng tôi có thể gửi phụ tùng thay thế bằng máy bay chứ không phải chứa trong xưởng chứa đồ.=So we can have these spare parts flown in rather than stored in warehouses.
Tôi thích nấu ăn bằng dầu ôliu chứ không dùng bơ.= I prefer cooking with
olive oil rather than butter.
Tôi thích ăn tiệm hơn là ăn một mình ở nhà.=I prefer to go to a restaurant rather than eat alone at home.
Thay vì chờ xe buýt, cô ta lấy tắc xi về nhà.= Rather than wait for the bus, she decided to take a taxi home.
Sau rather than trong câu trên, động từ wait ở thể infinitive without to (động từ chưa chia không có to). Nếu dùng Instead of thì động từ theo sau phải ở verb-ing. Cũng câu trên, nếu dùng Instead of: Instead of waiting for the bus, she decided to take a taxi home.
