Speaking Practice 1
My Job
I work for a large department store.
I sell women’s clothes and shoes.
It’s a good job because I like the other people who work here, and the hours are good.
Of course, I have to be polite to customers.
I don’t like living here. This is a horrible area.
The streets are dirty and it’s quite dangerous, as well.
I want to get dog and the town is not a good place for a dog.
It’s Ok for a cat or a small animal, but dogs need somewhere to run about.
I think.
Speaking Practice 2
I have a really unusual phobia.
It began when I was a little girl.
I was staying with my grandmother, and she asked me to go upstairs and get her cardigan sweater.
I opened the cabinet and saw this big dark green sweater with huge black buttons hanging there.
I was terrified.
I started screaming.
My grandmother rushed upstairs and finally managed to calm me down, but from then on it was a problem.
It was the buttons.
All buttons made me feel uncomfortable.
It’s difficult for me to buy clothes.
I try to find skirts and pants with just belts and zippers, but it’s not easy.
About a year ago, a button came off a colleague’s jacket at work, and I had a panic attack.
I’ve decided to see a therapist, but I’m embarrassed to say, “I’m scared of buttons”
It sounds silly.
Speaking Practice 3
Homes for poor people
Poor people often don’t have enough money to buy or build their own homes.
Some families share small apartments with other families.
The whole family sleeps in one room, and two or three families share one bathroom.
Some very poor people can’t live with other families, so they have to build homes with things that other people throw away, like bits of metal, fabric, or wood.
Places, where there are lots of these homes together, are called shanty towns.
There’s no electricity or running water.
Many people today are homeless and do not have a home at all.
Homeless people sometimes sleep on the street in big cities.
In some places, there are shelters where they can stay, but sometimes the only thing they have is a cardboard box.
Speaking Practice 4
My restaurant
I’ve had my own restaurant for ten years.
When I first bought this place, I thought it would be easy to run, but It’s very hard work.
I work long hours.
Sometimes we’re very busy, and sometimes we’re very slow.
We usually have a lot of customers on the weekends.
During the week, it’s sometimes quiet.
I never have a day off because there are always so many things to do.
I don’t do any of the cooking myself.
I have three very good chefs to do that.
Owning a restaurant is a tough job, but I love it.
I don’t want to do anything else.
